Kocaeli University Library and Documentation Center served as a small off-shelf system library bound to Yıldız University Engineering Academy Library with 5000 books until 1992. Professional service in librarianship was offered after becoming university in 1992. Technical operations performed on the universal standards developed services in librarianship and growth period began. In 1994, the first steps were taken towards becoming digital library. By providing PC CD-ROM databases from the sponsor companies, opportunities for academics from social and engineering fields had the access to scan articles from abroad as well as printed periodicals printed magazine subscriptions collection were increased. In 1995, Head of Library and Documentation was the first unit to connect to the internet in our university system with telnet. The virtual journey which started with single terminal, has reached to 80 computers with unlimited internet access with increasing number in 2008. Wireless internet is also available in the system. In 1999, all library services started to be provided in the computer environment, the library catalog began to be scanned from the Internet.
The CD-ROM collection of the data base which started in 1994 is approaching the level of the large university libraries with on line database subscriptions accessible to thousands of journals which can be scanned since 2001. ANKOS (Anatolian University Libraries Consortium) has had a great role and contribution to these subscriptions. Afterwards, EKUAL (Electronic Resources National Academic License) consortium which was conducted by ULAKBIM provided a free subscription to important data bases. Our library provided access to 62 kinds of online databases that include access to index and abstracts of 98.103 journals, approximately 39.766journals’ full text in 2011. Kocaeli University Library and Documentation Center will continue its services by keeping pace with the changing and evolving technology in coming years.
